Geography
Hachinohe is located in the northeast of Japan. It sits on a flat plain
that extends out to the Pacific Ocean to the east. The city covers an area
of 21,397 ha, and has two main rivers flowing through it, the Mabechi and
the Niida. These rivers divide the plain into three roughly equal sections. The
industrial, fishing and commercial ports are arranged along the coastal
belt at the mouthes of these rivers. |

| Hachinohe City Festivals |
|
| Hachinohe Sansha Taisai |
| This traditional festival has been held for more than 200 years. It began
when the city bought large figurines from the Tokyo and Kyoto area and
put them on hand pulled carts. These were the first floats. The highlight
of this festival is the parade held on the city's main streets from August
1st to the 3rd. This Shinto style parade includes huge gorgeous floats
and portable shrines. Each float tells a different story e.g. Shinto stories
and other myths and legends. |

| Enburi |
| The Hachinohe regional enburi is a well-known folk performance. This festival was originally to pray for a good harvest and celebrate the coming of spring. When the festival began the dancers would hold and dance with a hand plow called "eburi,"which is how the festival got its name. |
